CITY

Stockholm, Sweden

The public service broadcaster Sveriges Television AB (SVT) produces and transmits several television and radio channels. It is based in Stockholm and has subsidiary companies in several swedish cities. SVT is a member of the EBU and Northvision, a public service broadcasting group in Scandinavia. To ensure it remained up to date, the entire infrastructure in the main control rooms had to be renewed.

Task:

The objective was for the video/audio routing of all regional studios in Sweden to be operated centrally from MCR Stockholm. The project includes the renewal of the MCR infrastructure along with the installation of a new hybrid router system, along with the integration of existing video and audio components. Further challenges include the simplification of the complex signal chain operation along with the integration of the email client and booking system.

Solution:

BFE integrated a new central router system with new stands, new cabling and new video/audio components. New workflows were developed to run in a more efficient, simplified way at the workstations during a joint workshop held by BFE and SVT. The central control is managed by the control and monitoring solution developed by BFE, KSC CORE.

The router integration was managed with intermediate cabling for a range of sources. Only a minimum amount of interruption time was required for the target cabling. The actual migration was carried out step-by-step during operation, without being interrupted by live transmissions.

To achieve complete redundancy of the main signals, the old router was ultimately integrated into the new design as a secondary router.

Highlights:

  • The existing Central Video Router was exchanged for a new hybrid router system (SAM Sirius 840 Router System)

  • The existing infrastructure was reused and integrated

  • The KSC CORE solution was installed in parallel with the broadcast and infrastructure. It includes three KSC CORE servers, multiple PC-based KSC CORE clients with modules for running SVT MCR managers from four identical workplaces, along with several management and service workplaces

  • All regional studios in Sweden operated by MCR Stockholm can be controlled by video/audio routing

  • Integration and migration was carried out without any noteworthy interruptions in live operation

  • SVT received a separate test system, including a small router and its own source and target devices, to test software and workflows

Technology:

  • SAM Sirius 840 router system, size 576 x 576 with

  • 140 coax multiviewer O/Ps

  • 312 standard video inputs (coax)

  • 168 video AHP inputs (coax)

  • 12 MADI inputs (fiber)

  • 120 standard video inputs (coax)

  • 312 video AHP outputs (coax)

  • 12 MADI outputs (fiber)
