Control & Monitoring Systems
KSC Equipment

Accessories and Additions to the KSC Product Line

Are you already using KSC products from BFE and are looking to extend them? Or adapt them to your current broadcast equipment? Then the solution is simple: optimize your KSC on an individual basis. With a universal interface for overarching device communication, various hardware extensions or high-quality under monitor displays.

KSC GPIO-Controller

  • Universal interface for direct, simple, overarching device communication

  • Available with 32 inputs/outputs, galvanically isolated from each other and switchable

  • Combines the logical level of control and monitoring software with the physical studio environment

  • Interfaces: LAN; USB optional

  • Benefits

    • Robust, compact structure, low mounting depth, easy to service

KSC Multi-IO

The KSC Multi-IO consists of a redundant ARM-based control computer that can be controlled, monitored and, if necessary, switched over by higher-level services. Switching can also be carried out manually on the device using a recessed button. A GPI-IO controller with 32 (64 or 128) inputs/outputs and a device server with 6 serial RS232/422 interfaces are controlled.

Both computer modules (CPU1, CPU2) each have 2 LAN interfaces, whose LAN status information is displayed on the front. Which of the two computer modules is currently active is indicated by one of the two CPU activity LEDs (orange). A recessed button can be used to manually switch to the other computer module. The status (green) of the redundant power supply PSU1 and PSU2 is also displayed. The inputs and outputs of the GPI-IO sockets are indicated by LEDs in the groups IN (yellow) and OUT (orange).

At the rear, the bottom row is identical for all 3 models. The two sockets for the redundant power supply are located on the left-hand side. They are compatible with the power supply units of the operating devices from our company.

The first two sockets in the RJ-45 block are the LAN interfaces for the first computer, followed by the service interfaces, which can only be controlled with RS232 level.

A device server process on the computer cards serves the serial interfaces SER1 to SER6 as so-called COM-port mappings.

The interfaces can be completely remotely configured by software from a controlling computer, including switching from RS232 to RS422.

This is followed by the two LAN sockets of the second computer. The 25-pin DSUB sockets each accommodate 4 inputs and 4 outputs. The inputs are designed as constant current inputs with optocouplers and do not need to be adapted to different input voltages. The outputs are designed as solid-state relays and are therefore absolutely noiseless.

The KSC Multi-IO is supplied as standard with an ALU front panel in RAL9005 anodized with bright lettering and 2x NG-007 desktop power supply units 90-230V AC IN / 24V DC OUT 65Watt.

Continuity and innovation are the core values of the KSC product line - the solution for control and management applications in the broadcast and telecommunications market.

KSC FUMD-1S/16

KSC-FUMD-1S/16 benefit from BFE‘s many years of international experience in control systems for the broadcast and telecommunications market.

These display units with the designation „Color Under-Monitor Display Serial“ (FUMDS) are remote-controlled text displays for installation in studio monitor walls. Up to 64 displays can be operated on one serial port of a matrix controller. By using the RS422 interface, the displays can be remotely controlled. The transmission speed of the displays has been increased compared to the I2C bus displays.

The FUMD-1S/16 display unit consists of 18 dot matrix displays with easy-to-read characters at a height of 17 mm. Characters and/or symbols can be displayed in the colors green, red and yellow.

The text displays can be used to label the individual monitors with static text or with the name of the video signal connected in each case.

The signaling lights for red light or tally signaling are shown as coloured areas in the far right and left display of the text. Both „signaling lights“ can be controlled separately.

The FUMDS/16 units are part of the BFE matrix control system and are supplied with data and power via a FUMD-VT1 splitter box. Data communication is full duplex with RS422 signal level. Data communication via RS232 with PC connection can also be realized with a FUMD-VT2 split box via DSUB9.

Continuity and innovation are our core values for the KSC product line - the solution for control and management applications in the broadcast and telecommunications market.

KSC Appliance

KSC Appliance benefits from BFE‘s many years of international experience in control systems for the broadcast and telecommunications market.

The KSC Appliance is a versatile solution that can be used both as a single computer in an OB-van and in studio applications, for example in a news or broadcasting control room. The cluster capability enables high operational reliability through redundancy. In the event of a failure, the affected computer can be removed from the cluster, replaced and seamlessly reintegrated - all during ongoing operation. The individual computers can be located at different sites as long as a fast and redundant network connection is guaranteed.

The KSC Appliance consists of three main sections:

Section 1:

This computer has an Intel i5-1145G7E CPU, a 64-bit server operating system, 32 GB RAM and a 480 GB SSD hard disk. It offers multiple USB 3.2 ports, DisplayPorts 1.4 for driving two 4K displays, five Gigabit LAN ports and an RS232 com port. Section 1 is always part of the KSC Appliance.

Section 2 (KSC Multi-IO part):

This is a redundant ARM-based control computer that is monitored by higher-level services. It controls a GPI-IO controller with 32 inputs/outputs and a device server with 6 serial RS232/422 interfaces. Section 2 is only available in the Multi-IO variant and can also be used as a stand-alone unit.

Section 3 (central supply unit):

This unit consists of a redundant primary power supply with two separate wide-range inputs and a processor-controlled uninterruptible secondary power supply (UPS). The UPS unit ensures that the server continues to run without interruption in the event of a power failure. If the primary supply fails for a longer period (> 2 minutes), the UPS unit terminates all processes on the computer and ensures a defined shutdown. After a further period of time without primary supply, the battery management of the UPS unit is also disconnected from the system to prevent deep discharge of the batteries. When the supply voltage is restored, the computer restarts automatically. The batteries used are lithium iron phosphate batteries (LiFePo4) which offer a high capacity and long service life and cannot burn or explode in the event of a fault.

Continuity and innovation are the core values of the KSC product line - the solution for control and management applications in the broadcast and telecommunications market.

Radio Bremen

Performance capability in the smallest Space

Radio Bremen, founded in 1945, is ARD's smallest regional broadcasting agency. Halving ARD's financial compensation reduced the broadcaster's revenue annually by a third of the budget. Because of this, a package of measures was developed which included combining radio and television on a shared site. Introducing file-based television production also meant that it was necessary to enhance program material usability, as well as processes regarding central administration, archiving, and trimedial use. This project, along with the later upgrade of the networked production systems, was implemented by BFE.
