CITY
Berlin, Germany
The broadcaster Deutsche Welle is the state overseas broadcasting service of the Federal Republic of Germany and a member of ARD. Its German locations are situated in Bonn and Berlin. At these locations, people from 60 countries produce multimedia, journalistic content in 30 languages. Since BFE had already successfully completed projects for Deutsche Welle in the past, the decision was taken once again to enter into collaboration for the renovation of Studio 3 in Berlin.
Task:
The contract involved renovating and extending an existing TV studio including a production room for Deutsche Welle in Berlin. Parts of this project were also required for two further studios. Since it was planned to automate the production room in the future, it was important to ensure these components could also be integrated accordingly. The broadcaster also required an integrated augmented reality system to extend the scope of functions of the ultra-modern news studio.
Solution:
An extensive list of specifications was created for the integration of the systems Eyevis, Orad, and Vizrt, and to represent the complex system interconnections. This mainly included new cameras and studio background monitors with touch control. An LED wall with a graphics system and a media server for emergency display were also included. The LED wall was the highlight of the project and formed the focal point of the studio. 144 frameless, high-resolution LED modules from eyevis were mounted on a special attachment designed by BFE and positioned in the studio as a free-floating structure. With an overall resolution of 5760 x 1080 pixels, the construction is an impressive eye-catcher. By integrating augmented reality and social media content with Vizrt systems, Studio 3 is now one of the most modern and unique studios within ARD.
Highlights:
The LED wall is based on a special mount with a load capacity of more than one ton and makes the wall appear as though it's floating in the studio setting
Using the latest generation of GVG cameras including special light filters, the LED wall can even be used without an anti-moiré filter
Use of the latest augmented reality and social media technology
The StageTec Aurus mixing desk and the Nexus router (installed by BFE in 2009) were updated with inputs and outputs and additional DSP cards
Input signals and microphone channels are fed to the ProTools system in parallel via splitters. The transmission outputs and input channels are fed via an emergency switch. This means the broadcast can continue to be transmitted in the event of an emergency
